Tree Tops Park Tree Planting

By KEC member John McMurtry

Did you know that the average American uses up 9 trees a year in material alone for things like paper, pencils and furniture? In keeping with environmental harmony and balance, join The Kids Ecology Corps to help us plant some trees!

What:  This is for adults and kids as well.  This opportunity is for those ages 13 and older only due to county rules.  We will be planting several Pond Apple trees that a member of our community has raised.  We will learn about native vs. non-native or exotic plants and about the history of the Tequesta Indians on a hike afterward.

Where: Tree Tops Park.   3900 S.W. 100th Ave., Davie 33328  (954-370-3750)

We will meet at the marina.  The very first turn you can make at the park on the right.  You need to tell person at front they are volunteers so they don’t have to pay admission.  If you want to carpool, please call the below # and we may be able to find you a ride.

Directions: From I-595 take Nob Hill road south.  You will see the park on your left just before Orange Drive.

When: Saturday, March 20th from 9 am to 11:45 am.  We will be planting from 9 am to 10 am and the hike will be from 11:20 to 11:45 am so you can visit the park during the time in between.

The parks have tree planting opportunities during the rainy season only. So if we go earlier it should not be to hot and we will hopefully avoid any rain.

Bring: Please make sure that you are properly dressed. This includes closed shoes, a hat, gloves and long sleeves. We will bring extra gloves if you do not have. Please bring a drink.

Application form filled out.

**** Application:  Luckily the Parks and Rec. just revised their form to an easy 2 pages.  No one likes to fill out paperwork, but Broward County has several procedures and policies involving volunteer participation. Each volunteer must fill this out and it includes a parental permission for ages 13-17 years. Without these forms, you cannot be accepted as a volunteer due to liability issues.  We appreciate your assistance in the application process.

Please call the below number so that I can get you an application beforehand.

Last day to RSVP is by the end of Tuesday, March 16th.

Please call or e-mail with any questions.

Thank you and look forward to hearing from you!
